Dover Shrooms

Grow & Nourish

Our Mission

Dover Shrooms empowers low-income families to cultivate their own nutritious food. Through the simple act of providing a mushroom grow kit, we supplement family nutrition, spark children’s curiosity about natural food, and foster a connection to a sustainable local food culture.

Our Vision

We envision a world where every family has the power to grow their own food, every child delights in healthy eating, and our community is bound together by a thriving, sustainable, and equitable local food system. Through community-powered mushroom farming, we aim to create a regenerative, inclusive food system rooted in dignity, sustainability, and shared abundance.

Why Our Work Matters

Access to healthy, fresh food shouldn’t depend on your zip code or paycheck. Yet, for too many families, this is the reality. The challenge is twofold, touching both our community’s well-being and our planet’s health.

The Economic Barrier to Nutrition

There is a stark economic disparity in our food system. This is not just a perception; it’s a measurable fact.

$1.50 Average cost of 100 calories of ultra-processed food
$10.00+ Cost of 100 calories from natural, unprocessed food

This price gap creates an overwhelming barrier, often forcing low-income families to choose between affordability and nutrition.

The Environmental Cost of Food Production

Simultaneously, our conventional food systems place an immense strain on the environment. The resources required for mass-produced foods are often unsustainable.

1,800+gallons Water required to produce one pound of beef
1.8gallons Water required to produce one pound of mushrooms

A Simple, Powerful, and Local Solution

Localized mushroom farming can be a simple, powerful solution to help balance this nutritional and environmental inequality. Mushrooms are uniquely suited to address this challenge:

By providing mushroom grow kits directly to families, Dover Shrooms isn’t just filling plates. We are cultivating resilience, promoting dignity, and empowering families to build their own long-term food security.

Our ApproachHow We Cultivate Change

Our model is simple, hands-on, and designed to create lasting change. We focus on two key pillars: providing immediate access to nutritious food and building long-term community skills.

1. We Provide Ready-to-Grow Kits

It all starts with the mushroom kit. We assemble, cultivate, and distribute these kits directly to low-income families with young children.

Our kits are:

With each kit, families get to watch healthy food grow right before their eyes. Our goal is to remove barriers of cost, space, and complexity — putting fresh food directly into the hands of our neighbors.

2. We Empower Through Education

Beyond providing food for today, our mission is to foster food literacy and independence for tomorrow.

Through partnerships with local schools, libraries, and community groups, we offer free, hands-on workshops where families and community members learn:

By combining direct distribution with community education, we ensure that families are not only nourished — they are empowered with the skills and knowledge to thrive.

Meet the Shroom Crew

What happens when a bunch of dreamers are also obsessive doers? You get Dover Shrooms. We’re a group of neighbors, friends, and collaborators from right here in the Boston Metrowest area who believe that building a better future isn’t just some far-off idea — it’s something we can all do, one mushroom kit at a time. We’re united by the simple belief that everyone has the power to make a difference. Take a peek under our cap, and you’ll find a pretty unique bunch.

Our team is a vibrant mix of C-level corporate executives with strategic smarts, energetic high school students with brilliant ideas, and scrappy entrepreneurs who know how to make things happen. We’re proof that when you have a great mission, titles don’t matter as much as passion and a willingness to get your hands a little dirty. So, what’s the common thread that connects this motley crew? A shared, slightly nerdy obsession with… mushrooms! More than just a love for fungi, we believe that community-based mushroom farming is one of the most powerful, practical, and frankly, fun ways to tackle food insecurity, promote sustainability, and reconnect our community. It’s our secret ingredient for making a real, tangible difference.

Join the movement

We are always looking for more Dreamers and Doers to join the movement. If you believe a better future can be grown in our own backyards (and on our kitchen counters), then you’re already one of us.
